The choice of coconut fiber

It was at the beginning of the last century that Ferdinand Fert, great-grandfather of Frédérique and Arnaud Fert (current managers of La Scourtinerie de Nyons), brought back from a trip to southern India some coconut fiber threads. Much more resistant than all the Mediterranean perennial plants still used for weaving traditional scourtins, Ferdinand Fert quickly saw the potential of this fiber, previously unknown in the region.

A locksmith by trade, he developed and patented upon his return to Nyons a machine allowing the mechanical weaving of these famous filter pockets, and now uses the coconut fiber. These new generation scourtins now resist the unprecedented pressure of hydraulic presses that were emerging at the same time in the oil mills of the South of France.

An ultra-resistant material

Coconut fiber is a true revolution : being easier to spin, scourtins are now woven in record time on the new machines of Ferdinand Fert. More resistant, the scourtins from the Nyons factory can now be used for several seasons and are very successful throughout the region. Thanks to the tannins naturally present in the coconut fiber, it is water resistant and is rot-proof. It requires no chemical transformation: fabulous properties for an organic and sustainable material.
