At Les Ombrières de Provence, we work every day with a natural material: coconut fiber. As part of our CSR approach, we seek to reduce waste and make the best possible use of the resources we process. The leftover materials from manufacturing our shade sails — those pieces of natural fabric resulting from the custom cutting of our sails – are therefore not treated as simple waste: whenever possible, we give them a second life through local, community-driven initiatives.

This summer, our coconut fiber offcuts headed to the SPA in Grillon, in the Enclave des Papes (Vaucluse) –, operating as a non-profit organization. The goal? To help furnish the cat area and transform what was meant to go unused into a support tailored to their needs.

And clearly, the main beneficiaries quickly adopted their new space!

A thoughtful gesture for them, a second life for the material.

 

 

 

The Grillon SPA: a partnership with heart

The SPA de l’Enclave des Papes, in Grillon, shelters dogs and cats awaiting adoption in Vaucluse. When we offered them our coconut offcuts to outfit their feline space, the team loved the idea right away. The shelter’s volunteers collected the pieces of natural fabric and arranged them throughout the cat area – on the ground, up high, and in cozy nooks. The outcome? Cats scratching, rolling around, stretching, and enjoying themselves. Pictures that speak louder than words.

Offcuts, not waste


Chutes coco : valorisation des déchetsIn our manufacturing process, every coconut shade structure and every custom coconut sail generates leftover fabric. These pieces of natural coconut fiber retain all the qualities of the original material: strength, texture, and natural feel. As part of our CSR commitment, donating them rather than throwing them away was an obvious choice. We believe nothing good should end up in the trash.

This natural material, which we use to craft our shade structures, can thus continue its story in a different way once its initial purpose is served. Reducing waste, making the most of our resources, and, whenever possible, prioritizing reuse: that is what we strive for.

Above all, this experience reminds us that we don’t always need complex solutions. Sometimes, a material we no longer need can simply become useful to someone else.

Coconut fiber, an ideal material for cats

Just rough enough, sturdy, and free of chemical treatments, it proved to be an ideal playground for the residents of the Grillon SPA. The cats loved it: lying on top to watch over their territory or take a nap; hiding underneath to stay out of the heat and play hide-and-seek; climbing; scratching their claws, and rubbing their backs. The coconut fabric took it all in stride – and held up brilliantly.

And the story doesn’t end there!

 

After the cats… time for the dogs!

When we visited with the coconut fiber offcuts intended for the cats, we thought mainly about adding to their comfort. We never imagined these protections would also meet a vital need: shielding them from the heat.

On site, we realized how significant the shelter’s needs were, particularly in the dog area. The animals also need shaded zones to shelter from the sun and better cope with high temperatures.

So we returned to the Grillon SPA with a new mission: planning the setup for the dog area.

The installations are still underway… but one thing is already certain: our coconut fiber offcuts are nowhere near ending up in the bin!

This initiative is especially close to our hearts because it brings together two values we cherish: reusing a natural material and supporting an association working every day for animal welfare.

The next step in this adventure will focus on the dogs, with a simple goal: giving them more comfort and protecting them from the heat, too.

 

Giving purpose to every coconut strand

It extends into every action – repurposing agricultural waste from Kerala, using biodegradable, carbon-rich coconut fiber, and now donating offcuts to a Grillon SPA that puts them to good use. Because a natural fiber deserves better than the trash. And because animals deserve the best.
