Inspiration born from a journey
The story of Les Ombrières de la Scourtinerie begins with Arnaud Fert, a representative of the family’s fourth generation. During a trip to India, in the Kerala region, he discovered the many uses of coconut fibre in local craftsmanship.
Used for centuries to make ropes, rugs or everyday objects, this plant fibre has remarkable natural qualities: strength, breathability and durability.
Inspired by these traditional techniques, Arnaud Fert then imagined a new application: creating natural shade cloths made from coconut fibre.
This idea marked the starting point of an innovative project combining artisanal know-how and contemporary design.
The birth of the first shade sails
Back in France, several phases of research and development were needed to adapt coconut fibre to the constraints of outdoor shading. The right weave had to be found, the right tension, and resistance to weather conditions ensured.
