Coconut fiber, a family story
The history of the Fert family dates back to 1882, but it was truly in 1900 that the business began to flourish. That year, Ferdinand Fert revolutionized the production of scourtins, traditional filters used in the making of olive oil. He invented and patented an innovative machine to weave these scourtins from coconut fiber, a robust and rot-proof material imported from India, perfectly suited for this purpose.
The winter of 1956 marked a turning point for the company. A severe frost decimated millions of olive trees in France, leading to the bankruptcy of many companies. In the face of this crisis, Claude Fert, a visionary and creative individual, transformed scourtins into decorative objects. This gave rise to placemats and coasters, which over the years evolved into a range of vibrant colors and increasingly original designs.
In 2017, Arnaud Fert, representing the fourth generation, had a brilliant idea: to use this same fiber to create shade sails made from coconut. Thus were born Les Ombrières de La Scourtinerie®, which met with immediate success. The adventure continues, and in 2024, the brand evolves to become Les Ombrières de Provence®.

Coconut fiber shade sails and canopies provide an excellent ability to create a shaded and cool environment, making them ideal for sun protection.
- Dense weave: The coconut fiber used in these products is tightly woven, effectively blocking sunlight. This creates a shaded area underneath, reducing direct exposure to harmful UV rays.
- Heat protection: Coconut fiber shade sails and canopies have the ability to lower the ambient temperature in the shade they create. Thanks to their naturally insulating material, they allow for adequate airflow, helping to maintain a cooler and more comfortable atmosphere.
- Light filtration: These products also provide a gentle filtration of light, creating a pleasant and softened ambiance.
This creates a space conducive to relaxation and socializing, without the glare of direct sunlight. - Protection from UV rays: The weaving reduces solar radiation, offering added protection against the harmful effects of UV rays, such as sunburn and skin damage.
The breathable weaving of our Shade Sails gives them a low wind resistance, thereby reducing the risk of tearing or pullouts.
Our coconut umbrellas are not waterproof because, on one hand, the coconut fiber is not water-resistant and, on the other hand, the weaving is airy, allowing rain droplets to pass through.
When it rains, the coco fiber absorbs water, causing the umbrella to double its dry weight of 1200 g/m2 (and 1600 g/m2 for high density).
Once dry, it naturally returns to its original shape.
Coconut fiber is naturally resistant to water. Our canopies are capable of withstanding both high and low temperatures, and we have not received any specific feedback regarding frost.
It is important to note that in winter, snow can significantly increase the weight of the canopy. Therefore, in areas prone to snowfall, proper winter storage is essential to avoid breaking the cords.
In the event of hail, it is recommended to remove the canopy to prevent any potential damage. If that is not possible, ensure it is securely attached to reduce risks. The canopy does not fare well with hail or snow. However, hail does not occur every day, and damage depends on the size of the hailstones.
Our awnings and shade sails are made from 100% natural products, meaning they are untreated and free from any finishes or treatments.
Coconut fiber ages like wood and takes on a bleached, sometimes grayish appearance over time. This change is a natural process that highlights the authenticity and ecological quality of our products. It may be noticeable on the UV-exposed part from the first season and on the entire shade sail after 2 to 3 seasons.
The primary advice to minimize and delay this natural progression is to store the awning during the off-season.
It is possible that our hanging models may stretch in the days following installation or after the first rain. Therefore, we recommend tightening them about 1 month after installation or after 1 or 2 rain episodes.
The coconut ropes also loosen slightly over time; feel free to tighten them from time to time as needed (especially for the corner attachments of model 2 and the triangular model).
